When do babies need bodywork?

The body KNOWS what is going on inside. Organs and other structures can hold

structural strains, most often from womb positioning and birthing forces. This fact can lead to the common struggles of any typical baby. Colic, reflux, constipation, torticollis, breastfeeding challenges, irritability and fussiness are the results of blood vessels, nerves, and organs that need help.

You baby's behavior communicates this to us. Their body might be saying:

  • I have compressed nerves in my face or neck

  • Organs in my tummy are too tight or weak to move food & poo through

  • My spine has tension when I’m curved in my car seat

  • Even though my baby bones are soft, they may be compressed

  • My shock-absorbing fascia can’t work out the birthing strains

  • There may be a hidden torticollis from tissues pulling on my neck

  • My jaw may be pushed backwards on my face

  • I’m stuck in fight-flight because of emotions I’m having or sensing

  •  My umbilical cord pulled inward which can be seen in the belly button

Bodywork for Babies is a collection of manual therapy methods, based upon sound osteopathic principles of health and wellness. For over 40 years therapists around the world have had access to become qualified to use craniosacral therapy, visceral manipulation, lymphatic massage, lymphatic-fascia mobilization, and interstitial release methods. Research studies have demonstrated these methods are safe to apply to babies, even premature infants in the NICU. In fact, babies who receive bodywork during hospitalizations have shown to have better outcomes.
